Media’s Portrayal of Good and Bad

In many comedy movies, when a character has a decision to make, an angel and a demon both appear on each shoulder, in attempt to rightfully guide or deceitfully persuade the individual’s mindset. Though this seems comical, it’s actually more of a reality than you think.
No— angels and demons are not literally sitting on your shoulders, but in this life, we are certainly in a spiritual battle. Angels and demons do play similar roles in leading us to God or dragging us away from Him.
So does this mean that we have a guardian angel with us? In Hebrews 1:14, it reads, “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” To the humans who are going to become Christians… you will probably have a guardian angel who is trying to help you reach salvation. But the real question is…

Are you helping your angel help you?

Are you making his job easy? Or are you making his job difficult? The Bible doesn’t tell us exactly about how angels help us or about how demons attack us, but it tells us what to do about it.
  1. Fight alongside other Christians. Hebrews 3:13 says we should encourage one another daily so we aren’t hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. Don’t get the impression that its just you and God. Satan is like a lion— waiting for you to be alone and away from the herd in order to attack.
  1. Put on the full armor of God. Ephesians 6:10-21 tells us to STAND. Our battle is not to defeat Satan. That’s God’s job. Our goal is that when the battle is over, we are still standing.

Full Armor for the Spiritual Battle

Belt of Truth
It takes humility and renouncing selfishness to see and accept the truth, especially about yourself. Satan would be happy to see that when people challenge you, you can’t handle it, even when it comes from the scriptures.
Breastplate of Righteousness
God’s grace makes us righteous in the eyes of God. If your understanding of God grace is that you do not need to make an effort to stop sinning and do what is right, you do not understand God’s grace properly. Titus 2 teaches that God’s grace teaches us to control our passions and do what is right.
“Gospel Shoes”
Sharing your faith puts you on the offense against the forces of evil. Your love for others is what Satan hates. When you love, you become in harmony with God. Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.
Shield of Faith
Let’s believe strongly. If you have doubts, face them and work them out! If you’re not sure about the things of the Bible, solve them, study them out, etc. “He who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:6)
Helmet of Salvation
Can you be confident in your own salvation? Confidence in your own salvation comes from knowing and understanding what the NT is teaching about how to become a Christian and how to be saved the gospel message.
Sword of the Spirit
Do you always feel like reading your Bible? Maybe, but there are times were we don’t feel like reading our Bible. Thankfully, we can be disciplined in our personal Bible study if our motivation comes from our love for God and our concern for our salvation. There’s no book on Earth that has the power that the Bible has. No book on Earth that reveals God to us like the Bible; let’s learn it.
Prayer
The struggle to pray is a primary part of the struggle for your soul. Don’t you feel stronger when you pray? Don’t you feel weaker when you don’t?

Thoughts to Consider:

Help your angel help you! Think about how your angel is feeling. Imagine if you missed a week of prayer. How would your angel react?
If you get separated from the herd, you get eaten by the lion. He’s waiting for you and me to be weak: he’s watching and he’s waiting.
Here are some ways Satan will try to make you fall:
Satan’s Playbook-
  1. Caught in a sin.
  2. Romantic relationship outside of Christ.
  3. Pulled away by money.
  4. Blame God for the bad behavior of people.
  5. Losing your first love for God.
  6. Lack of contentment.
